THE HISTORY AND LIFE
OF THE JEWISH DIASPORA

Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish People, is more than a museum. This unique global institution tells the ongoing and extraordinary story of the Jewish people.

Beit Hatfutsot connects Jewish people to their roots and strengthens their personal and collective Jewish identity. Beit Hatfutsot conveys to the world the fascinating narrative of the Jewish people and the essence of the Jewish culture, faith, purpose and deed while presenting the contribution of world Jewry to humanity.

Beit Hatfutsot opened in 1978 thanks to the vision of Nahum Goldmann, President of the World Jewish Congress 1954-1977. In 2005, the Israeli Knesset passed the Beit Hatfutsot Law that defines Beit Hatfutsot as
“the National Center for Jewish communities in Israel and Around the world”.

Tedx Talks 2018 (17.25)

Scientists have wondered for many years why Ashkenazic Jews are disproportionally subject to certain genetic diseases.

A geneticist named Shai Carmi found a surprising answer using modern genome analysis tools.  Carmi has written that in the fourteenth century the root stock of this now large population consisted of only about 350 breeding individuals.  This finding can explain the disease proclivities -- but it contradicts virtually all historical sources.

This talk explores how to bring history and science back together.  The only credible union of the two involves some disturbing conclusions and suggests the possibility of a slow but thorough medieval genocide

Audiopedia 2014 (59.03)
For other meanings see Ashkenaz (disambiguation).

Ashkenazi Jews, also known as Ashkenazic Jews or simply Ashkenazim . Y'hudey Ashkenaz, "The Jews of Germany"), are a Jewish ethnic division, which coalesced in the Holy Roman Empire around the turn of the first millennium. The traditional language of Ashkenazi Jews consisted of various dialects of Yiddish.

DNA GPS: WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF YIDDISH?
The University of Sheffield 2016 (4.10)
The origin of Yiddish, the millennium old language of Ashkenazic Jews, is something which linguists have questioned for decades.

Now, a pioneering tool – the Geographic Population Structure (GPS) – which converts DNA data into its ancestral coordinates, has helped scientists pinpoint that the DNA of Yiddish speakers could have originated from four ancient villages in north-eastern Turkey.
