ISRAEL: THE STARTUP STATE -
A TALE OF TECH, STARTUPS
AND ISRAELI MENTALITY

WHY IS ISRAEL CALLED A STARTUP NATION?
nsight 18 (1.29)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 3-day tour to Israel.  It’s for the first time that an Indian head of State is visiting the nation, even though India and Israel enjoy very good diplomatic relations.
Israel’s capital Tel Aviv ranks sixth in the global startup hub rankings.
Tel Aviv’s tech ecosystem is valued around USD 22 billion, nearly 14 percent of the capital’s USD 153 billion GDP.
Israel also has a dedicated R&D fund.
The government invests USD 700,000 in each startup operating in medical sector,
clean tech, and heavy tech space.

BEYOND START-UP NATION:
ISRAEL'S GROWTH PLATFORM
FOR GLOBAL CO-INNOVATION
Milken Institute  2015 )57.05)
Over the past decades, Israel has turned adversity into a competitive advantage. Beyond the geopolitical storms raging around it, Israel's future rests largely on its ability to continually reinvent its technological mojo and transfer it to partners in other emerging economies. Co-innovation with new partnerships focused on global problems with high growth potential, such as water management, agricultural science for food, alternative energy, health, and of course, cyber-security -- in which Israel already has world-beating technology -- are key. Israel's strategic economic plan envisions the scaling up of startup nation models in many regions. Yet this requires closing gaps in economic participation within Israel itself and strengthening ties beyond its "island" economy. At this event, we'll report on our fieldwork
in research, development and training in Israel.

HOW ISRAEL'S TURNING SOLDIERS INTO ENTREPRENEURS
Hello World: Ep. 3
Bloomberg 2016 (27.56)
Unit 8200 is an elite branch of the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, that specializes in computer security and murkier, more controversial stuff, such as espionage and cyber attacks. The Unit resembles the National Security Agency (NSA) in the U.S.
So it’s not that surprising that Unit 8200 and the IDF
would give rise to clever, interesting tech startups.
What’s remarkable
is how Israel has turned its soldiers into entrepreneurs.

Today, Israel has about 5,500 startups, and it added 1,400 new ones just last year. It has become a world leader not just in security but in chip, printing, biotech, and corporate software, as well.
In this episode of Hello World Bloomberg Businessweek’s
Ashlee Vance goes to Israel to discover
how the IDF became such an efficient technology engine.
