HOW ISRAEL BECAME A LEADER
IN WATER USE
IN THE MIDDLE EAST
PBS NewsHour -  Martin Fletche
2015 (7.56)

Over the past few years in Israel, the country's water shortage has become a surplus.
Through a combination of conservation, reuse and desalination, the country now has more water than it needs. And that could translate to political progress for the country in the Middle East,
one of the most water-stressed regions in the world.

ISRAEL: LEADING THE WORLD
IN WATER TECHNOLOGY
Wisdom Land 2017 (8.34)
Surrounded by and populated with deserts, Israel has famously created a green, agricultural oasis out of its arid landscape. This was made possible by the incredible advances that Israeli scientists and researchers have been making since Israel gained its independence in 1948. Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion had a vision of “making the desert bloom”, which catapulted water technology research onto the national agenda, where it has remained ever since.

Through a combination of
conservation, reuse and desalination,
the country now has more water than it needs.

HOW ISRAEL'S TURNING SOLDIERS
INTO ENTREPRENEURS
Bloomberg 2016 (22.56)
Unit 8200 is an elite branch of the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, that specializes in computer security and murkier, more controversial stuff, such as espionage and cyber attacks. The Unit resembles the National Security Agency (NSA) in the U.S.  So it’s not that surprising that Unit 8200 and the IDF would give rise to clever, interesting tech startups. What’s remarkable is how Israel has turned its soldiers into entrepreneurs.

Today, Israel has about 5,500 startups, and it added 1,400 new ones just last year. It has become a world leader not just in security but in chip, printing, biotech, and corporate software, as well. In this episode of Hello World Bloomberg Businessweek’s Ashlee Vance goes to Israel to discover how the IDF became such an efficient technology engine.
